The acoustic quality of a performing arts centre is a key factor in determining its overall success and functionality. Although elements such as construction materials, sound reinforcement systems, and interior finishes play important roles in shaping the acoustic environment, the architectural geometry of the space remains one of the most influential design factors affecting sound behaviour. The form and configuration of a building influence sound reflection, diffusion, reverberation, clarity, and speech intelligibility, which collectively impact both audience experience and performer comfort. This study explores the influence of architectural geometry on acoustic performance in a Centre for Performing Arts located in Port Harcourt, Nigeria. Adopting a qualitative research approach, the study relies on an extensive review of existing literature, case study and theoretical acoustic assessments to examine how various geometric forms affect sound distribution within performance spaces. The findings indicate that factors such as room shape, ceiling configuration, wall orientation, spatial volume, and surface geometry have a significant effect on acoustic performance. Furthermore, the study highlights several architectural design strategies capable of improving acoustic conditions while preserving the aesthetic appeal and functional requirements of the facility. In conclusion, the research shows that incorporating acoustic considerations at the early conceptual design stage can contribute significantly to the development of more efficient, functional, and sustainable performing arts centres. Based on these findings, recommendations are proposed for architects, acoustic consultants, and policymakers involved in the planning and design of cultural and performance-oriented buildings.
