The Digital News Report 2019: South Africa Supplementary Report is a stand-alone report on digital news consumption in South Africa. The report provides important insights into how the English speaking South African population engages with and uses news. The research suggests that trust in news media is eroding and concern about misinformation is high. South Africans are among those who use WhatsApp most which has become a primary network for discussing and sharing news in the country. It is also the only country surveyed where the usage of WhatsApp for any purpose is bigger than Facebook. The report supplements the main Reuters Institute Digital News Report 2019 that is based on a YouGov survey of over 75,000 online news consumers in 38 countries.
