Web-Based Farmers Market in Nigeria: A Technological Approach

Abstract

Traditional agricultural markets in Nigeria face persistent issues of inefficiency, limited access, and lack of transparency—especially for rural smallholder farmers. As digital solutions increasingly reshape global trade, this study examines the potential of web-based farmers’ markets to transform agricultural commerce in Nigeria. Through a systematic review of global platforms such as Mandi Farm, Homegrowns, and Virtual Farm Market, the study identifies key trends and recurring gaps including fragmented features, lack of real-time market insights, limited language support, and low digital literacy.

 

To address these challenges, the study proposes a scalable, secure, and user-friendly digital platform built with React, Firebase, and Tailwind CSS. Core features include real-time agricultural updates, mobile-first design, secure payments via Paystack, and personalized dashboards for farmers and buyers. Recommendations for future improvements include integrating logistics, offline capabilities, AI-powered price forecasting, and multilingual support. This work contributes to the growing field of digital agriculture by offering a practical, inclusive model for connecting farmers and consumers, promoting fair trade, and enhancing rural economic opportunities in Nigeria.
