One of the primary objectives of the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) is to improve access to higher education opportunities for those who have not been able to continue studying since leaving high school. There are numerous reasons – financial, linguistic, personal, social, developmental, geographic, familial, health-related – why an aspiring student might not be able to access higher education studies, but perhaps the most common reason is academic, that they failed to obtain a high enough matric result to study at a public higher education institution (HEI).
