## Background
The armed conflict that erupted in Sudan in April 2023 triggered one of the world's largest
and fastest-growing displacement crises. By late 2024, an estimated 7.7 million people had
been internally displaced, with Red Sea State — and Port Sudan specifically — emerging as
one of the primary destinations for those fleeing conflict in Khartoum, Darfur, and Kordofan.
Displacement camps around Port Sudan absorbed hundreds of thousands of individuals under
conditions characterised by extreme overcrowding, limited sanitation, disrupted water supply,
and severely constrained access to healthcare services.
In this context, maintaining childhood vaccination coverage becomes both critically important
and uniquely difficult. Vaccine-preventable diseases — including measles, polio, and
meningococcal disease — thrive in displacement settings where population density is high,
nutritional status is compromised, and herd immunity thresholds are difficult to sustain.
The WHO and UNICEF have documented sharp declines in routine immunisation coverage across
conflict-affected Sudanese states, with Red Sea State among those with the most concerning
gaps. Yet no published study had characterised vaccination status, access barriers, and trust
determinants specifically among the camp populations around Port Sudan during the current
conflict.
