This report provides the most comprehensive account to date of smart city public space surveillance in Zimbabwe. The report explores how public space surveillance and smart city initiatives can affect human rights in Zimbabwe. Surveillance technology has the potential to advance development and public safety. However, it also has the potential to violate human rights. The surveillance of public spaces in Zimbabwe is not new and dates back to precolonial times. Adopting a deep dive into the deployment of public space surveillance, this report leverages desk research to unpack the extent of digital surveillance deployment in public spaces and its incidence.
