The stigma surrounding mental disorders has a major impact on clinical outcomes, quality of life, and self esteem of affected individuals, and is one of the greatest barriers to accessing mental health services. Studies have shown that stigma is a worldwide phenomenon. However, in line with the “What matters most” concept, stigma affects individuals differently according to their culture and to their social roles. In addition, stereotypes and attitudes of the public towards mental disorders can differ according to countries and cultures.
The aim of the scoping review is to synthesize literature on stigma and discrimination in the Maghreb region (Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia).
